Glossary of Foundation Course Terms for First-Year MBBS Students

Welcome to MBBS! 🎉 You’ve just stepped into the world of medicine, where people suddenly throw around strange words like AETCOM, competency, IMG, OSCE — and you nod along, secretly wondering, “What on earth is that?”

Don’t worry. This Survival Glossary is your cheat sheet. By the end, you’ll not only understand these terms but also use them like a pro on Day 1. (And yes, your friends will think you’re super smart 😉).

1. Foundation Course

Your official warm-up month before MBBS begins. It’s a crash course to adjust you to medical college life: orientation, basic skills, communication, ethics, stress management, and even sports. Think of it as your bootcamp for becoming a doctor.

2. Indian Medical Graduate (IMG)

The final product NMC wants to create. An IMG is not just someone who knows medicine, but also:

  • A skilled clinician
  • A compassionate communicator
  • A responsible professional
  • A lifelong learner
Basically, the doctor society deserves 💙.

3. Competency

This isn’t about “studying chapters.” A competency is what you should be able to do.
👉 Example: Instead of just knowing CPR, you should actually perform CPR correctly on a patient.

4. AETCOM

Short for Attitude, Ethics and Communication.
The secret sauce of a good doctor. It teaches:

  • How to speak with patients empathetically
  • How to act ethically in tough situations
  • How to be a professional, not just a degree-holder

5. Orientation

Your “getting to know the college” week. Expect:

  • Campus tours 🏫
  • Faculty introductions
  • Talks on “What MBBS is really like”
  • And of course… ice-breaking with batchmates

6. Skills Module

The hands-on basics every doctor must know, even before dissecting cadavers. Includes:

  • First Aid & CPR
  • Universal precautions (hand washing, PPE)
  • Biomedical waste disposal
  • Vaccination practices

7. Universal Precautions

Golden rule: Treat every patient as potentially infectious.
Gloves, masks, hand hygiene = your invisible superhero shield 🦸.

8. Professionalism

Not about wearing a tie. It’s about:

  • Honesty
  • Responsibility
  • Empathy
  • Respect for patients, peers, and teachers
It officially begins at your White Coat Ceremony.

9. Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

Nobody will spoon-feed you in MBBS. SDL means:
👉 “You take charge of your learning.”
If you Google “heart sounds” out of curiosity or watch a YouTube video before class, congrats — you’re doing SDL!

10. OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination)

A fancy name for practical exams where you rotate through stations.
Station 1: Handwashing 🧼
Station 2: Taking a patient’s history 🩺
Station 3: Explaining a medicine to a patient
Short, focused, and very real-world.

11. Community Orientation

Doctors are not just for hospitals. You’ll visit villages and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) to see how healthcare works in real life. Expect to interact with families and learn about their health challenges.

12. Mentoring

A faculty member becomes your guide — not just for studies but for handling stress, managing exams, and surviving medical college life.

13. Electives

Later in MBBS, you’ll get to pick areas of interest (like research, clinical exposure, community work). This is your chance to explore what excites you most in medicine.

14. Biomedical Waste Management

Segregating needles, gloves, and lab waste properly. It’s about safety for you, patients, and the planet 🌍.

15. Stress Management

Yes, MBBS is stressful. Foundation Course introduces you to yoga, meditation, time management, and coping strategies. (Hint: This will save your sanity later).

16. Communication Skills

How to talk to patients (especially in local language), break bad news gently, and build trust. Doctors who can’t communicate = patients who don’t listen.

17. Computer Skills

Don’t roll your eyes 😅. Medicine today = digital. You’ll learn:

  • Basics of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Searching PubMed for medical literature
  • Using apps for medical study

18. Extracurricular Activities

Sports, arts, cultural events. NMC actually made it compulsory because doctors need balance.

Messi + Microscope = why not? ⚽🔬

19. Humanities in Medicine

Yes, you’ll read stories, poems, and even watch movies! It’s about developing empathy and understanding human emotions.

20. White Coat Ceremony

A symbolic event where you wear your first white coat. It’s not just about clothes — it’s about stepping into the role of a healer.
